Index Mission Statement
We believe that students need opportunities to be passionate, debate, develop a sense of self-control, have real-world challenges, and share responsibility for each other.
Our mission is to provide a learning community that promotes these beliefs through state and district grade level expectations, addressing students’ needs, talents and interests, and adhering to the following guiding principles:
- Address District and State learning expectations through thinking skills that cross all content areas.
- Work in multi-age groups in order to appreciate and learn from the wide range of experiences, interests, and strengths that exist in a true community.
- Integrate learning through thematic units structured around guiding questions.
- Apply skills to real problems so that students make connections, plan, act, and reflect.
- Teach and learn in a variety of settings, with a variety of tools and human resources.
- Have students self-assess in order to inspire ownership, initiative and responsibility.
- Take time to engage in learning deeply and personally.
- Assess each student's progress on a personal continuum, as well as in relation to district and state standards.
- Involve parents, students, staff and community members as vital partners in their child’s learning experience.
- Encourage the values of rigor, cooperation, and resilience in all members.
- Create joyful interactions to celebrate individual and collective strengths.
- Explore new ways to teach and learn.
