Frequently Asked Questions

I hear the student grade themselves. How do you grade students?

We apply a four level self-assessment process. Students evaluate themselves as either a Novice (I don’t know this), an Apprentice (I am learning this), a Practitioner (I can do this) or a Scholar (I can do this independently and teach it to others). Students present portfolios multiple times a year including work samples and evaluations of these samples. This is in addition to teacher conferencing assessing students based on these criteria.

Do I need to place a deposit to secure a spot in Room Nine Community School?

No. There is no deposit. If you are offered a spot, you will learn about our PLEDGE that covers the costs of field trips, special teachers and additional programs we participate in.

What are my child's chances of getting in? Can you tell me how many people are ahead of our family on the list?

If you are applying before the yearly lottery this is a difficult question to answer. Each class averages 17 slots. Once we know which of our students will return, we look at the application pool for that grade to fill a class.

Kindergarten is a new group of students each year; but all other grades will depend on the number of returning students. Each year is different. Some years we have more applicants than spots to offer and other years we are able to accept every applicant. Siblings have priority placement, then we place students from within district before we can offer spots to students from outside of the Shoreline School District. If you are unsure as to whether or not you live within Shoreline School District, please follow this link to determine your district.

At the time of the lottery, if we have more applicants than slots to offer, the students are randomly ranked and spaces are offered in this new ranked order. New applicants after the lottery are placed at the end of the listing and offered as their name comes to the top of the list.
